NIKAU SUPERETTE ART PROJECT
2 Queen Mary Avenue. New Lynn.
1-29 November, 2024
My painting will be installed in a micro gallery — a restored and repurposed community notice board attached to a side of the Superette. This site is a suburban place at the intersection between enterprise and ecology, where the community encounters issues around migration, digital displacement, security and community. The painting will feature traces of my body’s interactions with the box’s dimensions and location, calling attention to critical repetitive care work that underpins, supports and connects this community’s physical and social infrastructure.

Borrowing Colour
From my photographs of the Superette, I create a palette of colour swatches—an extracted and abstracted collection of colours from the Superette's exterior and its local environment. When I borrow these for use in my painting, they retain qualities present at the original site while allowing new relationships to form within the artwork and later onsite in the noticeboard window. |
